ABOUT NEWCASTLEOften referred to simply as Newcastle, Newcastle upon Tyne is a metropolitan borough within Tyne and Wear, a metropolitan county in the northeastern part of England. Positioned on the River Tyne's north bank, Newcastle began its existence as a human settlement during the period of Roman Britain. Founded as Pons Aelius, the settlement was originally a Roman fort along the defensive network known as Hadrian's Wall. Visitors to Newcastle are in a prime position to set out to visit the remnants of Hadrian's Wall, and visit of the many archaeological sites dotted along the north of England. Newcastle, however, has as its namesake, a castle built in 1080 A.D., under the Duke of Normandy, Robert II, William the Conqueror's eldest son. For visitors to the city of Newcastle, its long and vibrant history will no doubt be capitavting. However, as the 20th most populous area in England, Newcastle also provides a diverse urban setting with any amenities, comforts, and entertainments that a guest might desire.
Those interested in history will no doubt want to visit the aforementioned remains of the Roman fort at Pons Aelius and Newcastle castle. Newcastle has always been an important site in British history, playing a key role during the Anglo-Saxon and Norman periods, the Middle Ages, and the English Civil War. However, Newcastle also played an important part in Britain's Intellectual history, as the fourth largest printing centre during the 18th century. For anyone interested in history, Newcastle will be certain to please.
After enjoying a romp through British history, modern Neåwcastle has much to offer the visitor. It is the host city of the one of the world's most popular half marathons, known as the Great North Run since 1981. For those interested in shopping, Newcastle's Eldon Square is the largest shopping complex in the UK, and Northumberland Street was ranked as the most expensive shopping street for its rent in the UK outside of the city of London.
Newcastle has much to offer the traveler, from its ancient history, and from all the ages between then and now. Newcastle has always been a center of activity and interest. |
