The Castle Keep Because of its importance for the development of the city, the remains of the Norman castle is a must. While most of the structure was demolished to make way for railway tracks in the 19th century, the castle keep and a gate still stand. The Tyne Bridge A world famous sight, the Tyne Bridge was the world's largest single-span bridge when it was opened by George V in 1928. Spanning the river Tyne, it connects Newcastle with Gateshead.
BALTIC Centre of Contemporary Art BALTIC is a major international centre for contemporary visual art. This renovated flourmill is one of the biggest temporary art spaces in Europe with over 3,000sq m of art space, a cinema/lecture space and a library and archive for the study of contemporary art. BALTIC presents a dynamic and ambitious program of changing exhibitions, events and projects, offering something new with every visit. Great North Museum This new museum, opening in spring 2009, will be one of the regions' major visitor attractions. The museum will house major displays exploring the wonder and diversity of the natural world, a planetarium, a large-scale, interactive model of Hadrian's Wall, spectacular archaeological finds from Ancient Greece and mummies from Ancient Egypt and a life-size T-Rex dinosaur skeleton.
