Attractions in Newcastle

Situated along the banks of the River Tyne, Newcastle is a city with a long and vibrant history going back some 2000 years when it was a Roman fort. As such, there is a cornucopia of sites and attractions for visitors to the city to explore, including Hadrian's Wall, the Great North Museum, Castle Keep, Grainger Town, Grey's Monument, St Nicholas Cathedral and others.

Hadrian's Wall was built by the Romans in 122 AD as a fortification to define and protect the Empire's northern frontier. Visitors will find remains of the wall in Denton Burn, a suburb of Newcastle, and an interactive model of Hadrian's Wall, fossils, animal and plant displays, as well as other exhibits, at the Great North Museum near Newcastle University.

A popular attraction in Newcastle is Castle Keep, or the Castle of Newcastle upon Tyne. Founded in 1168 by Henry II, it stands on an earlier castle site built by the son of William the Conqueror and the Roman fort, Pons Aelius.

The historic Grainger Town in the city centre, named after the 19th century developer, Richard Grainger, is a treat to anyone with a penchant for historic buildings. Visitors will find fine examples of Georgian and Victorian architecture, the Grainger Market, the Theatre Royal and Grey's Monument here.

Located on Grey's Street in Grainger Town and built in 1838, Grey's Monument was constructed in honour of Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, for passing the Great Reform Act of 1832. It was created by the same sculptor that created Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square, Edward Hodges Baily.

St Nicholas Cathedral dates back to the 12th century when it started life as a simple, wooden church. However, over the centuries, it has been expanded, and now stands as a most impressive structure. Perhaps its most recognisable feature is the magnificent Crown Spire, built in the 15th century.

The above is just a small sampling of what Newcastle has to offer. In addition, visitors can explore any number of museums, take part in one of the city's festivals or enjoy a night at one of the city's many theatres.
