Dining in NewcastleAh, the historic city of NewCastle. Friendly folks, plenty of history, lots to see, as long as you don't carry coal there you should do fine (the locals are long since tired of that joke). And one you have filled your head with history, there are plenty of places for a weary traveler to fill his stomach with a hearty meal. A must-stop is of course Blackfriar's Restaurant, located on Friars Street. The oldest public dining establishment in Britain, it was founded in the year 1239. Traditional English fare in a very traditional English atmosphere and a history that simply cannot be matched anywhere else. The Marco Polo Restaurant & Bar, found at 33 Dean Street, is one of the most respected names in eateries in Newcastle, serving excellent International Italian cuisine with excellent service at a great value. Can get a little crowded on Friday nights. The chic Living Room restaurant, found at 12 Grey Street, serves up excellent modern British cuisine. Their desert board is especially fantastic. The Cherry Tree Restaurant, found at 9 Osborne Road, is another well-reputed place to enjoy the finest in modern British fare. They also feature an extensive wine list. For the best Indian food in Newcastle, look no farther than the Rupali, found at 6 Bigg Market street. One of Newcastle's oldest Indian dining establishments, the Rupali features reasonable prices and what many claim is the strongest curry in Britain. La Toscana Ristorante, located at 22-24 Leazes Park Road, serves excellent Tuscan and Italian fare, as well as pizza, and is only a short walk from Eldon Garden center and St. James' Park. Starters & Puds, found at 2-6 Shakespeare Street, is a nice little bistro located in the vault of a former bank. Food and service are wonderful. The lamb and Tuscan sausage both come highly recommended. For a taste of Spain, one should find their way to El Torero, located in the Milburn House at City Centre. A combination of friendly swift service and excellent food never disappoints. Pizza Express Ltd, found at 10 Dean Street, is probably the best place in the city when you've got a craving for a slice of pie. |
